At present the Western Counties Air operations Unit covers the counties of Avon & Somerset and Gloucestershire.  It is based less than 3 minutes flying time from Bristol so that in can react to any serious crime in the city and the surrounding area.  Until the creation of the unit the area suffered high levels of vehicle crime, vehicle pursuits and on-street crime such as ram raiding.  The presence of the helicopter within a few minutes has markedly reduced that effect.

Jack said "The proposal to close the unit at Filton and move it to RAF Colerne in Wiltshire will have a very serious effect on the aircrafts' ability to reach incidents in the local area in an acceptable timescale.  I have, therefore, asked the Secretary of State to assess the implications.  The flying time alone from RAF Colerne is approaching 20 minutes, leaving nothing at all to allow for communication difficulties and start up times.  I would submit that the proposals will make the aircrafts' ability to provide any meaningful service to Bristol almost impossible."

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to look at the proposals again.

Local Conservatives are leading the campaign to keep Post Offices open.  Across the country, over 4,000 branches have been shut, with a further 2,500 earmarked for closure by 2009.  Locally, the reality of these cuts is being felt.

MP for Filton & Bradley Stoke, Jack Lopresti, comments, "Post Offices are the lifeblood of our communities.  As more and more Post Offices face uncertainty, the elderly and the sick are being denied a service to which they are entitled.  As the Government takes more responsibility away from the Post Office, many people are struggling to receive even the basic services, including collecting payments."

Nationally, 4 million people have signed a petition to keep Post Offices in business.  Labour has closed almost 10 Post Offices a week since 1997.  Conservatives are taking action and listening to your needs.

The Conservatives plan to:

  • Give Sub-Post Offices more freedom to offer a wider range of business services
  • Push for more Post Offices to be 'One Stop Shops' – trained staff could then advise on a range of matters, including tax returns, pension entitlements, opening hours and so on
  • Encourage local Councils to open 'Council Counters' in local branches
  • Allow the Post Office to work with carriers other than the Royal Mail
  • Prevent the Royal Mail taking business away from sub- Post Offices by under-cutting the prices they can charge for postage

We, the undersigned, call on the Government to stop its Post Office closure programme in South Gloucestershire.  We urge the Government to retain investment in the Post Office network, to remove restrictive regulations from Post Office businesses and to reverse the removal of Government business to safeguard our Post Office network.

On September 30th 2011, a 13 year old was seriously inured after being hit by a motorbike on Bradley Stoke Way.

Local residents are calling on South Gloucestershire Council to improve road safety on Bradley Stoke Way by introducing a light-controlled pedestrian crossing, cutting the 40mph speed limit, placing warning signs, and removing a stretch of dual carriageway to prevent dangerous overtaking.
